Premier League. Anfield, 31st January 2015. Attendance: 44,718 The visitors for this match, West Ham, are a club almost as old as Liverpool. They started in London in 1895 as Thames Ironworks and reformed in 1900 as West Ham United, but it was not until 1923 that they played in the top division, the same year that they also appeared in the famous FA Cup final against Bolton at Wembley (mentioned in last week's report of Liverpool's FA Cup match). They have spent most of the time since then in the top flight but have never won the title. Their strongest spell was in the 1960s when they won the FA Cup in 1964 and then the European Cup Winners Cup in the following year. In the 1966 World Cup final, when England beat West Germany 4-3 at Wembley, West Ham had three significant players in the team: Bobby Moore, who captained England, Geoff Hurst, who that day became the only player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, and Martin Peters, who scored England's other goal in the final. More recently, the 'Hammers' have struggled and have been relegated twice in the last 10 years. Their most recent promotion back into the Premier League was just two seasons ago. This season has been West Ham's strongest for many years and at the start of play for this game they were 7th in the league with 36 points, which is their highest Premier league position after 22 games. At the same point last season they were in a relegation position with 18 just points, half their present total. Their league record at Anfield is very poor, not having won on this ground since 1963. Their own home is the Boleyn Ground, where they have played since 1904, but at the start of the 2016-17 season they will move to the Olympic Stadium, which was built for the recent London Olympic games. 2016 is also the projected date for the completion of Liverpool's current redevelopment of Anfield. * * * The West Ham manager since 2011 has been the very experienced Sam Allardyce. He is known for his direct style of play and initially this upset many of the West Ham fans as the club has a tradition of stylish football. When they were struggling last season there was a campaign by some fans to get him sacked but some wise signings in the summer (Song, Kouyate, Diafra Sakho, Valencia) and a switch to a more cultured approach has won them games and praise from many people. He has also had the bonus of having a fit Andy Carroll available and Carroll has impressed many with his strong all-round team performances. He has the distinction of being both Liverpool's and West Ham's record signing, but the difference between the fees - Liverpool paid £35 million for him in 2011, West Ham paid £15 million in 2013 - indicates how much Carroll has not fulfilled the potential he showed at Newcastle. Another returning ex-Liverpool player was Stuart Downing, whose form has so improved at West Ham that he has played himself back into the England squad. For this game Brendan Rogers picked almost the same team that was beaten on Tuesday at Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final, the only change being Lallana coming in for Gerrard, who had a tight hamstring. The big news was that Daniel Sturridge was named as one of the substitutes. Liverpool have sorely missed Sturridge's penetration and goals (21 last season) and his return to fitness has been eagerly awaited. His last appearance was on August 31st. The Reds started this game on a strong run in the league (only one defeat in the last ten games) but one point behind and one position below West Ham, which is the first time this has happened in the Premier League after 22 games. * * * There was much that was similar about this match and last week's Cup game against Bolton. Liverpool had 66% of the possession and had 21 goal attempts, 7 of which were on target while West Ham had 7 attempts, 2 on target. The Hammers seemed happy to contain Liverpool and hope for a goal on the break or from a set piece. Indeed, their best chance in the first half came from an Andy Carroll header from a corner. For their part, Liverpool constantly probed the Hammers' defence through Coutinho's clever passing and Sterling's and Markivic's movement, but they were unable to get behind West Ham with a clear opening. The best chance of the first half came, a little luckily, to Markovic. Sterling dribbled into the box from the left wing and seemed to be pulled over by O'Brien and, as many appealed for a penalty, Downing failed to clear the loose ball but Markovic, with just the keeper to beat, put the ball wide from 12 yards with his weaker right foot. West Ham were unable to maintain their disciplined shape in the second half and it took only six minutes for Liverpool to take the lead. Moreno crossed a ball to Sterling on the edge of the box and as he played it off his chest it (luckily) deflected off defender Reid's shoulder to Coutinho who immediately curled a beautiful short pass over the top for Sterling to run onto and side foot home from 8 yards past the advancing keeper Adrian. Liverpool continued to press and create chances but none that came close to a goal. West Ham looked increasingly mentally and physically tired and Carroll was an isolated figure. On 60 minutes he injured himself making a tackle, for which he was booked, and a few minutes later limped off to be substituted by Carlton Cole. * * * Five minutes later the crowd were on their feet as Sturridge prepared to come on as substitute. A great cheer welcomed him onto the pitch. He looked sharp and was immediately involved in the game, linking up well with Sterling and causing the visitors' defence problems. On 78 minutes he had a header narrowly wide and then a few minutes later sent Anfield wild with a goal just 12 minutes after coming on. The move started from a throw-in in Liverpool's own half and involved Sturridge, Henderson, Sterling and Coutinho in a move up the right. Sterling was clearly fouled during the move but referee Marriner sensibly waved play on. As Coutinho approached the box centrally Sturridge moved into space in the inside right channel and Coutinho slipped a neat pass to him, which he controlled smartly with his left foot before hammering it past Adrian from an angle with his right. Adrian will not be happy that he was beaten at his near post. The goal was greeted ecstatically by the Anfield crowd and the Liverpool players. People were happy enough just to see him come on as sub for 20 minutes, but for him to also score was a special treat. This result meant that Liverpool and West Ham swapped places, the Reds now being 7th with 38 points, just four points off a Champions League place. West Ham now lie 8th and have not won away for two months as they continue their slow slide away from possible European qualification. This was Liverpool's third consecutive league win and clean sheet and they now have Sturridge returning to fitness, so things continue to improve. They will need to remain at their best to continue this momentum as their next league game is away to city rivals Everton. http://scousehouse.net/magazine/nlw_photo605.html ≫ ＜８月22日（金）＞ 08:00 ホテルで朝食。今日から日本のバンドのギグがスタートする。いよいよ フェスティヴァルが始まるという感じ。天気も素晴らしい。寒いけど。 09:00 学生寮グランド・セントラル・ユナイトへ。スカウスハウス・ツアーの お客さんがここに泊まることになっているので、事前チェックのためだ。なにし ろ部屋数が2000くらいあるうえに、レセプションにいつもスタッフがいるとは 限らないし、部屋のコンディションも実際に見てみないとわからない。過去には 窓が閉まらなかったことや（ものすごく寒い！）、シャワーからお湯が出なかっ た（死んでしまう！）こともあった。というわけで、あらかじめキーを預かり、 部屋のチェックを済ませておくことが必須となる。 幸運にも（と言っていいのか？）今年の割り当て部屋は何も問題がなくてひと安 心。あとはリヴァプール入りするお客さんひとりひとりに寮での暮らし方をガイ ドをすればオッケーだ。「ガイド」というのはオーバーでも何でもなくて、キッ チンやランドリーの使い方ばかりでなく、キーの使い方までレクチャーしなけ ればならないのだ。だいたいどの学生寮も同じタイプのキーなのだが、これが使 いこなすのにかなりのコツが要る代物で、どんくさい人だと部屋の前で何十分も かけてドアと格闘する羽目になる。しかも、エントランスから自分の部屋に入る までに、そのキーを４回も使わなければならないのだ…まあ、慣れれば簡単なん だけどね。 10:00 マリオット・ホテルで行われているレコード・フェアへ。ここ数年、 えーと５年くらいかな、毎年この期間にこの場所で開催されている。その前は違 うホテルでやっていた。レコード・ディーラーたちの顔ぶれもいつも同じなので、 もうすっかりお互い顔見知りだ。古いディーラーになると15年かそれ以上も前 からの付き合いになる。街で会っても声をかけてくれるのがうれしい。今年もス カウスハウス通販用にいくつかのレコードを仕入れた。彼らとは日曜日のコン ヴェンション会場でもまた顔を合わせることになる。 11:00 えりさんと落ち合って、ビートルウィークのスペシャル・イヴェントが 行われるタウン・ホールへ。その際、我々はリヴァプールのロード・メイヤー （名誉市長）と面会することにもなっている。 「タウン・ホール・レセプション」と題されたイヴェントは、収容人数を制限す るために、11時半、２時、４時半の３回に分けての開催となった。我々はその 最初のラウンドに参加する。 ビートルズが1964年に凱旋した際に市主催のレセプションが開かれたタウン・ ホール（今日のイヴェントはその50周年を記念しての企画である）は、1749年 建造の歴史的建築物であるばかりでなく、建物まるごと芸術作品といってもいい ほどの豪華さである。ビートルウィークのイヴェントに使われるのは、2001年 以来13年ぶりだ。今回のイヴェントのために２つのステージが用意される。メ インとなる煌びやかなボールルームではブラジルのクラブ・ビッグ・ビートル ズとスコットランドのゼム・ビートルズという２大メジャー・バンドの演奏が セットされている。 11:30 タウン・ホールに到着。入口でキャヴァーンのダイレクター、デイヴさ んに挨拶。 「やあカズ、ロード・メイヤーの招待、ちゃんと憶えてたか」 「忘れるわけない〜。デイヴさんこれ見て、精いっぱいフォーマルな格好」 「ははは、上等じゃないか。カズ、もうすぐボールルームでクラブ・ビッグ・ ビートルズの演奏が始まる。ロード・メイヤーはその際に挨拶をする。なので、 12時ごろにこのエントランスに集まってくれるか？ そこの部屋で謁見だ。お れも立ち会う」 「了解、りょうかい。ロード・メイヤーかあ、楽しみだけど緊張するな〜」 タウン・ホールのエントランスには、リヴァプール市が自由市民の称号を与えた 著名人の名前が金のプレートに刻まれている。1984年３月７日に受章したビー トルズの４人の名前もそこにあるのだが、ポール、ジョージ、リンゴには名前の 後に「MBE」の勲位が刻まれていて、ジョンにはそれがない。1969年にこの勲章 を返還してしまったからだ。MBEとは、「Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire」の略である。英国王室としては、勲章を返納されても 勲位そのものを取り消すことはないのだそうで、ということはジョンも「MBEつ き」にするのが正しいはずなのだが…。「MBEなし」は、リヴァプール市がジョ ンの意思を尊重した結果なのかもしれない。 そしてもうひとつ、リヴァプールFCのファンにとって嬉しいことに、レッズ最 強時代の監督、ボブ・ペイズリーの名前もここで確認できる。受章は1983年11 月23日で、ビートルズのひとつ上に、「OBE」（Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire）の勲位とともに刻まれている。素晴らしい。 そう遠くない将来、ここにはスティーヴン・ジェラードの名前も刻まれることに なるんじゃないだろうか。もちろん「MBEつき」で。 タウン・ホールが一般に公開されるのは毎月だいたい１回（８月は３回）のみだ が、ここはぜひたくさんのひとに訪れてほしいスポットである。 さて、えりさんと２階に上がる。ビートルズが手を振った有名なバルコニーでは 撮影サーヴィスが行われていた。希望者はバルコニーに出て手を振り、外で待機 しているプロのカメラマンが撮影。後日そのプリントを受け取るというものだ。 もちろん有料である（たしか10ポンドだった）。我々は時間がないのでパス。 奥のボールルームに入ると、クラブ・ビッグ・ビートルズが演奏の準備をしてい るところだった。客席はほぼ満員。誰か知ってる顔はいないかな〜と見渡すと、 ああいたいた、チャールズだ。アメリカのエージェントで、僕と同業者だ。彼と はずっと接点がなかったのだが、半年前の２月にニューヨークで初めて会った。 チャールズがビートルズのアメリカ上陸50周年を記念したイヴェントを企画し て、僕が日本からビートルズ・バンドのザ・クローバーを連れて行ったのだ。 「やあチャールズ、憶えてる？」 「カズ！？ お前みたいなアメイジングやつ忘れるわけないだろー！」 「なんで？」 「なんでって、ニューヨークで10本もギグをブッキングするなんてお前以外に できるやついないぜ」 「はは。でも10本じゃないよ、９本。君のを除けば８本」 「どっちでも同じじゃねえか、アメイジングなことに変わりないって」 「ありがと。でも君のほうがすごいじゃん、あんなでっかいイヴェントをやっ ちゃうんだから」 「いやいや、でもたいへんだった。なんとかうまく行ってよかったけど」 「うん、お互いにね」 あのニューヨークのイヴェントはすったもんだの連続でほんとにたいへんだった なあ。面白かったけど。 …などと２人で感慨にふけっていたら、クラブ・ビッグ・ビートルズのステージ が始まった。MCはおなじみニールだ。タキシード着てる！ 12:00 えりさんとエントランスへ。さっきのチャールズと、もうひとりおじさ んがそこにいた。 「やあチャールズ、ロード・メイヤーはまだかな」 「まだだな。カズ、こっちはリカルドだ。メキシコのエージェント」 「やあ、リカルド、よろしく。チャールズ、リカルド、こちらはエリ。僕のボス」 「ははは、よろしく」 「ところでカズ、今年もバンド連れて来ているのか？ クローバーは？」 「今年はバンド３つ。クローバーは来てないよ」 「そうか、彼女たちはニューヨークの写真、プロモーションに使ってる？」 「いや、ぜんぜん、だな」 「おいおいなんでだよ？ あの超名門のビター・エンドで演奏したんだぞ。ほか にもいろんなところでギグやったんだろ？ すっごい宣伝になるじゃないか」 「う〜ん、わかんないよ。活動あんまりしてないみたいだし、解散するんじゃな いかなあ」 「か、かいさん……」 「チャールズはまた何かイヴェント企画する？」 「ああ、来年７月にやる。よかったらバンド連れて来てくれよ」 「どこで？ ニューヨーク？」 「いや、○○ってところで、ニューヨークとボストンのあいだくらいかな」 「７月か。考えておくよ」 …などと話しているうちに、デイヴさんが登場。市の係の人も来て、我々全員が エントランスそばの応接室に通された。スウェーデン（ノルウェイだったかな？） のエージェント夫妻も一緒だ。 ソファに座ってしばらくして、ロード・メイヤーのエリカ・ケンプさんが入って 来た。 ロード・メイヤーというのは普通に訳せば「市長」になるのだが、選挙で選ばれ るメイヤー（市長）はちゃんと別にいるので、市政そのものにはタッチせずに、 市の親善大使的な任務を果たす、いわば「名誉市長」である。タウン・ホールに 席をおき、任期は１年で、市会議員の中から選ばれる。 名実ともにリヴァプール市の「顔」であるエリカさんは、さすがに素敵な女性 だった。えくぼがとてもチャーミングで、目の力がすごい。ひと目見ただけで、 知性と教養とパッションを感じさせられた。 今日のこのインヴィテーションは、キャヴァーンを通じて長年リヴァプールへ貢 献している海外のエージェントたちに感謝の意を表したいということで、エリカ さんが直々に企画したものだそうだ。 リヴァプールのロード・メイヤーに感謝されるなんて、あまりにもおそれ多いこ となので、僕はほとんど口を開けないくらいに緊張してしまった。でも、エリカ さんのあたたかい人柄と、リヴァプールのために尽くそうという姿勢は、ひしひ しと感じることができた。こんな人がトップにいたら、リヴァプールはもっと もっといい街になるだろう。リヴァプール市民のえりさんも感銘を受けていたよ うだった。僕らもがんばろう。 エリカさんに感謝状をもらって記念撮影をして、タウン・ホールをあとにした。
